The Mascara Question

When it comes to mascara, women are fiercly protective, wearing their choices as a badge of pride. I'm a Lancome gal through and through, ranking Defincils and Flextencils mascara as two of my all-time favorites. While, in a pinch, I'll reach for Benefit Bad Gal lash and Prescriptives False Eyelashes, few other mascaras meet my standards: I need dramatic, long, thick, voluminous! Many of my friends can't stand Flextencils or False Eyelashes, however, instead preferring Maybelline Great Lash, that old standby classic. When I asked my friend F. what she liked about it, she said (and I quote!), "I like that it defines my lashes but doesn't make them look clumpy, like I have a ton of gross product on my eyelashes. I hate that clumpy, spidery look." Sold! Except, Great Lash does nothing for me—aside from providing a bit of color, it makes my already albino lashes look skimpy and anorexic.

So here's my question to you: what's your favorite mascara, and why? I'm genuinely curious.

Hi, Jolie...No matter what mascara I try, I always go back to Great Lash. What I like about it is that it doesn't clump and make me have spider eyes. But what I don't like is (like you say) it doesn't do much for me as far as giving my lashes length and volume. When I find one that does all things...I'll let you know. But I'm sure you'll find it first!

Definicils is the only mascara for me. I tried to get on the Great Lash train, but it was an utter disappointment. I've tried many a mascara in the quest for lovely lashes, but Lancome always comes out on top.

For a while I was a mascara whore, trying out every different brand I could get my hands on. I was never satisfied though. Smashbox was too flaky and I constantly got mascara "chips" in my eyes. I found that Benefit smudged too much and I was constantly poking myself in the eye with the fat brush. MAC made my lashes look short and stubby. On and on. Then, per your recommendation, I ran out to buy Lancome yesterday during my lunch break and as of this moment I am in love. The brush is thin (I'm a bit squeamish when it comes to sticking things near my eyes) and allows for easy application. I noticed the appearance of added length and definition instantly. No smudging or flaking either!

Hi, Jolie.
I am loyal to Estee Lauder's "More Than Mascara". It has the most fantastic thin and dense application brush (key factor), doesn't clump and lengthens my short and thick lashes perfectly. The mascara's cylinder doesn't hold as much product, so it never "goes bad". Love it!

It is a little obscure, but I'm a big fan of Princess mascara made by Borghese. It gives some curl, doesn't clump due to the "silk powder foundation" it is made from, and has a really luxe silver/gold container that makes you feel like a princess using it. :)

I am a big fan of Kiss Me Mascara. I love it becuase it doesn't smudge, run, clump or flake. Reason being, it forms tiny water-resistant "tubes" around your lashes. I know, sounds weird, but it really does work!!

For years I was a Great Lash girl. It was no-fuss and seemed to do the trick, but then I received Definicils as a gift and thought I'd mix things up. All of the sudden I had my friends telling me how long and pretty my eyelashes looked. I don't think I'll be going back.

I'm with you, Nadine--I mean, Jolie. I don't get the cult of Maybelline Great Lash. At all. Like you, I've got skimpy lashes. I can't live without Loreal Double Extend (the primer is fine, but I don't really use it) and Kevyn Aucoin's lenghtening mascara--it's got that funky "tubing" technology so it comes off in neat little clumps with warm water. I'm also obsessed with Kevyn's eyelash curler. Made me retire my Shu Uemera long ago.

Dior Show in black or brown - makes your lashes soooo long!!!

I also really like the Kanebo mascara. It is so "stay on strong" though that it only comes off in clumps with make up remover and slight pressure!

My favorite item is Estee Lauder's lash primer! I use that and then put on Flextencils from Lancome and then a coat of Estee Lauder's Lash XL --

MAC Fiber Rich Lash mascara is the greatest invention. It actually has fibers (that you can see) in it, and makes your eyelashes look amazing. It doesn't hold curl that well, so I'll usually do a coat of Great Lash underneath.

I canNOT use great lash, because it dries my lashes out.

Great Lash is gross, in my opinion. Dry, flaky, bland, BLAH. I feel your pain with that one.

However- I am a former Lancome girl, but I have a new fave: STILA MAJOR LASH.

Only $9 and not even a drugstore brand! Gone are the old days of underdog mascaras from Stila. They've changed their formula (took out the mica, shimmery stuff?) and really impressed me. Also, they have a new one - something about Fiber Optics. A little more expensive ($12.50), but might be worth a try.

I've been through them all; the MAC one that smelled like roses, all 1,370 of the Lancome/L'Oreal over priced contraptions, etc., etc. Major Lash is perfect.

Wow, I can't believe how many of you are stuck in the old days with the Great Lash. I recently found the "little black dress of mascaras": Boujois Pump up the Volume, waterproof. Go get it! $14 at Sephora.

I love Mary Kay's mascaras, any formula. They don't flake, they make my lashes fat and LONG...I was using Great Lash and then I went to a party one night and I couldn't BELIEVE the difference. Plus it's not much more expensive than some drug store stuff. I am all about Mary Kay mascara.

Christian Dior Maximeyes in black. I already have really long lashes, but the wrong mascara makes them look skinny and well--like spider legs. Maximeyes thickens them and gives them a soft, rich look...never gloppy, never clumpy. Something about the size of the brush and the applicator works for me, too. It's shorter than most tubes of mascara and for some reason the shorter applicator makes for an easier application.

8/03/2005 6:11 PM

I was really fond of Maybelline's "Full and Soft," because of the brush. It never allowed the product to clump. But it had a brittle texture that wouldn't allow for multiple coats. Then I got a sample of Lancome's new "Hypnose," which, while it has an inferior brush, goes on very well and allows for multiple coats. How to strike a compromise? Could my "Full and Soft" brush fit into my "Hypnose" tube? As an aside, I'd like to ask: why do the shades of brown always look black anyway?

I have fairly long, black eyelashes, but they're super thin. Great Lash makes my lashes all spindly, MAC is decent but leaves smudges... I want full, lush, drag queen eyelashes!

Enter DiorShow mascara. Hello, I'm in love. It leaves my lashes nice and full and black, just like I like them. In the two weeks since I've had it, I've had three guys tell me what "gorgeous eyes" I have. Cool.

8/03/2005 6:22 PM

There is something wrong with Dior show, I think the brush bristles are too packed and close together. And I think the size of that thing is for a drag queen, I don't know anyone with eyes that would need that size of a brush, besides a 6'4" man. I use to use Voluminous which is a fave of Courtney Cox. But now I use Loreal Double Extend and it does work well, stays on all day and then washes off easily at night.

I am not a fan of Great lash as I had a reaction to it in high school. That was quite a while ago so I keep thinking of trying it again. Just enough for my non-existent lashes.
