Beauty Question: Facials

A. writes,
Hi Jolie (or Nadine),
I was wondering if you could recommend any good facialists or spas for me to try out. I've always envied girls with really tight, flawless, glowing skin and I think it's time for me to experience the kind of happiness that can only come from perfect skin as well. I can't go anywhere too too expensive, nor can I bear the thought of being in a room full of UES women. I'd love to hear back from you.
A.,
I've never really been into facials—I'm much more of a massage lover—probably because I dread the extractions. I have to tell you, though, the most amazing facial I ever had in my life was at the Sally Hershberger Face Place. It's not cheap, unfortunately (I just called, and it's $120 for about an hour and twenty minutes, and $170 if you include reflexology), but it was the most relaxing, pain-free, blissful thing you could imagine. I recommend going just once, as a treat, and getting the facial plus reflexology—it was so fantastic that I forgot about the extractions and actually fell asleep. Better yet, my face wasn't red afterward, and for me (I'm literally pink for 20 minutes after I wash my face), that's really saying something!

Another great option is Ella Bache, one of the best places in the city. Their standard Hydrating or Radiance facials aren't exactly cheap (both are $110), but they have a half-hour mini-facial for $50, and also offer an hour-long "Spa Saver" facial for $50 if you book it that day. And, of course, there's always Bliss (try the new 49th street location, in the W hotel; $100 for the 70 minute Basic Bliss Facial)—not the most zen atmosphere, but as long as you arrive on time, they'll get the job done!

mario badescu's facials are only $65! i mean, it's kinda in/out factory-ish..but it's $65 for an hour and 15 minutes. i recommend them friends who NEED facials, not friends looking for a luxurious add-on to thier massage...

Good recommendation Miss...although their extractions can be killer! (No pain, no gain?)

Mario Badescu is the best! The facialists at Badescu are a blessing from above. They will have your face looking like it did when you were 17.

Mario Badescu is great spa! I’ve been there a few times. I have tried numerous spas but I would have to say that the Fountain Day Spa in Hackensack NJ (Riverside Square Mall) did the best job for me. I believe The Aveda Facial is $70.00. The extractions were painless and the environment was very relaxing and serene. My face looked fabulous!!!

I went to Bliss (the SoHo location) a couple years ago, at it was horrible. The facialist talked me into a peel that made my face red for days. The staff was snooty and the place was freezing. I left behind my favorite necklace and tried to call the facility, which was like trying to break into the Kremlin. The dispatch wouldn't put me through, despite my pleading, and said they left a meesage with the staff, but I never heard anything back and was leaving town. This is in contrast to Burke Williams in LA, which is utterly relaxing, has super friendly staff, and makes you feel like a rock star for way less money. I left a necklace in their locker (yes, it's a chronic problem), and they had it whisked up to the front desk, put in en envelope & waiting for me with a smile. Bliss is a big headache.

No, Mario Badescu is not a place where you want to spend a full day. Trust me!
Try Avon, Elizabeth Arden, the Spa at The Peninisula Hotel - something along those lines. Don't bother with Bliss - Meta was right about their service - it stinks and everyone complains but they never do anything about it. go www.spaddicts.com and look one up. You can find specials and reveiews of lots of great places for every budget.

I agree Claire pains! I went to Bliss once and was really, really disappointed. I had this vision of a total NY swank spa experience & much to my dismay, walked out of there literally sulking! I've enjoyed myself more with my Caudalie grape seed mask, fuzzy slippers & plush robe in my own bathroom. A friend recommended the Avon Spa. At first I was like, "AVON, you have to be kidding me"! I was able to put aside my doubts, visited Avon and to my surprise was extremely pleased! It was a much more satisfying experience than Bliss!

for a really cheap facial, $35 for over 1 hr, go to Christine Valmy Beauty School in Midtown. I have had good luck with the students I have had and my skin did glow afterwards.

personally i love Soho Sanctuary because it really feels like i'm not in the city. my last visit consisted of a dreamy massage, refreshing cucumber ice water, private rain fall showers, zen music piped through the whole spa and delicious dr. hauschka products galore...

I went to Badescu for awhile (many years ago), but didn't like the factory line aspect. You could hear other clients through the walls and the aesthetician would disappear while they worked on another client. Plus they were heavy on the selling. I went to Lia Schorr once and my facial was given in a barcalounger. Plus they kept asking if I wanted to buy a package.

I've been going to see Svetlana Delon at Skincare Perfection for over 5 years, to get glycolic facials and dermabrasion. You are the only client. She uses high quality products and you also get a relaxing neck and shoulder rub after the mask is first applied. It is a very calm and professional environment. Telephone: 212-759-6580 and she's on 60th and Park.

I JUST went to Mario Bedescu on Monday, and for $67 with tax, it was amazing. No frills to say the least, but it has everything you need in a facial, including some nap time ;)

For results, i am loving Skinklinic, thought it doesn't have a pampering atmosphere. Everything is done by doctors and nurses so there's no tipping permitted. I just got a peel there today and I was getting compliments on the way out the door from other customers. They always have some special running and while it's not exactly cheap, they can always accomdate and the technicians are very knowledgeable and no-pressure.
